Community Support

Will Power 5K

In October 2013 our school rallied behind a local family to help support their 7 year old son after he had suddenly been diagnosed with Burkett’s Lymphoma. With healthcare costs instantly skyrocketing and the need to be bedside with their son a priority, the financial burden of out of pocket expenses and day-to-day responsibilities were quite challenging. Kids R Kids owner, April Garcia, and several other determined moms in the area teamed up to organize a 5k benefit run with the goal of raising $7,000. With April’s past experience organizing 5k runs, the team’s goal was to use social media and the web, word of mouth, newspaper advertisements, and flyers to reach out to local businesses, community members and families for support. Through April and her husband’s involvement, Kids R Kids staff of teachers and directors worked tirelessly for the cause and the school became a major sponsor and host location of the event. In the short span of 2 months race plans steamrolled to host almost 500 participants, including the mayor of Indian Trail, local news media, and photographers, and raised almost $15,000 for this local family. Mission Accomplished!

Team Lizzie Day

In support of one of our own students undergoing heart surgery, we named September 13, 2013 the official “Team Lizzie Day” to honor her and her family.  Leading up to the day of her surgery our entire staff was involved in creating something special that would bring friends and community together in support of this amazing little girl.  Top priority: embrace her and her family with the love of many and the knowing that her surgery and recovery process goes flawlessly.  Quote from the event: “Though she be but little, she is fierce!"

Make A Wish

In early 2010 Kids R Kids of Matthews decided to join the Make-A-Wish foundation to help grant the wish of an unfortunate child suffering from a terminal illness.  With our passion to support children and the community we serve we became determined work closely with Make-A-Wish to request our efforts benefit a child locally.  In May 2010, determination paid off after just a few months of planning when our staff of teachers, directors and owners successfully planned a 5k run that raised $7,000 to help grant this child’s wish come true. What was the wish?...to attend the Grand Ole opry to see Carrie Underwood perform live.  Wish granted!

Other Miscellaneous Community Efforts

Steve's Coats For Kids:  Each year in January we pull together our resource of over 400 Kids R Kids family members and their children to donate gently used and new coats for other children in the region in need of a warm coat.  Our efforts are in support of WSOC TV’s weatherman Steve Udelson’s annual “Steve’s Coats For Kids” coat drive.

Hurricane Sandy Support:  After Hurricane Sandy devastated the northern east coast and most of New Jersey, the entire country rallied behind those that fell victim to Sandy’s destructive path.  We joined that effort by teaming up with a local dance studio, Miss Donna’s School of Dance (http://www.missdonnasschoolofdancing.com/), to help fill up the entire trailer of a 28 foot semi trailer with food and supplies.  Mission:  to send 22,500 pounds of food and supplies to shelters in the heart of need along the New Jersey shore.  Mission Accomplished!!

Holiday Angel Tree:  Kids R Kids of Matthews joins the efforts of local elementary schools to provide holiday joy and cheer to less fortunate boys and girls through the donation of wrapped gifts.  We have also sponsored our own in-house Angel Tree to help Kids R Kids families and their children.

Highway Clean-up:  Kids R Kids of Matthews participates in the NCDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program.  We have adopted a 2 mile stretch of Potter road just south of our school.

Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte: We have supported our local RMH in various ways. We participate in their volunteer meal prep programs, Pop the Top program, and their Sport a Shirt fundraiser.

Christmas Stockings: Each December we participate in filling stockings for children in need through the Union County Christmas Bureau.

Children and Parent Relationships:

In addition to heavily believing in supporting the community in which we serve, we also strongly believe in fostering family relationships between children and their parents.  Each year we host numerous events and celebrations to strengthen these relationships.  We host a special Preschool Prom each spring, a Family Picnic during our WOYC celebration and a Thanksgiving meal each fall, all hosted on our premises here at the school.  We also invite the moms in each Mother’s day and the dads in on Father’s day to have a special treat with their child.  We participate in the national celebration of “Week of The Young Child” every spring, where we we plan special activities throughout the week for the children and their families to do together at home, as well as create a memory book for them to cherish.  We love to mingle with our families outside of school so we plan family night out often with our staff, parents and children.   Two other very special events that we host each year are our annual Christmas and Graduation Program.  These events are typically held offsite due to the large attendances and always involve each of our 11 classrooms.
